Biography of Christopher Martin Grimes.

Educated at the Bermuda Technical Institute, Christopher commenced painting in 1974 due to the influence of a friend who painted. Without formal training, through practice, observation and perseverance, he acquired his unique style of painting and rendition.

Christopher’s primary interests are in painting historical scenes, accurately recording the old days, prior to the introduction of color photography. Views of Old Bermuda continue to be his preferred subjects, and he has an extensive collection of old black & white photographs of those early days as well as many Bermuda books. He studies relevant Bermuda history prior to starting a painting, in an effort to accurately portray life as it was. Old Bermuda photographs and Ordnance Survey maps are used for reference, as well as talking with the island's senior's to determine details of a particular subject. Many scenes he paints are not available in photographic form, so much research is required to accurately portray the scene.

He also has produced a number of paintings depicting famous naval battles of the 18th and 19th centuries. A recent departure by the artist has found him painting portraits, with emphasis on children, dogs and horses.

Christopher counts his main influences as being John Constable and John Sinclair Black. During his early years of painting, exposure to two original oils from the 1930's and 40's of Bermuda scenes by W. F. Snow had a profound influence on his style and choice of subject matter.

Recently retired from the real working world, he now spends many hours a week painting. He may also be found taking photos of many of Bermuda's buildings and scenes for reference.

Christopher's paintings may be found in corporate, commercial and private collections throughout the world. A calendar published in 1984 celebrating Bermuda’s 375th anniversary featured twelve of his paintings, with scenes from the wreck of the Sea Venture to the Bermuda Railway, covering a time frame of some 325 years. Additionally, his paintings have been used to illustrate a number of books on Bermuda. Listed here

Working from his studio in Southampton, Christopher primarily produces works on commission, but occasionally produces works for general sale, as time permits. He works in Oils, his preferred medium, as he favors the workability and durability, and considers the depth and richness of oils as an asset to his style of painting.
